Annotation | As health and healthcare changes, hospitals need to respond to such changes and adapt accordingly, but implementing change can be politically difficult. This paper looks at the role of the hospital, focusing on the objectives and the process - the "how" and "why" - of hospital change. It sets out the reasons for change: safety, access, efficiency, prevention, responsiveness, and equity. The authors suggest that, because of political barriers to change, the National Health Service (NHS) is not achieving the best outcomes in terms of improving quality of, and access to, services.
