AnnotationThe Government launched its first dignity in care campaign in November 2006, aimed at creating a care system with zero tolerance of abuse and disrespect of older people. However, the dignity issue was one of the areas of care highlighted in the Department of Health's 'Essence of Care' consultation in February 2001, reinforced by the National Service Framework for Older People published in March 2001. The key elements of the current Dignity in Care campaign are highlighted. This article then goes onto review the progress of dignity as practiced in the hospital wards and the views of various high profile figures, such as Pauline Ford, RCN Advisor for Nursing Older People are sought. It is argued that senior nurses are key figures in championing the practice of dignity on the wards, and an example of good practice is illustrated by Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in London.
