AnnotationThe presentation was used by the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, at his monthly press conference in April 2006, to outline current and further developments as contained within the ten year National Health Service Plan published in 2000. It was an opportunity taken by the Prime Minister to answer criticism of the NHS's progress under this 10-year plan. The press conference (question and answer format) is reproduced (not fully) within The Health Summary. The presentation contains figures sourced from the Department of Health (DoH) on: staff and pay; waiting times for appointments and operations; heart disease; cancer; and public attitudes toward the NHS. Some of these issues were raised in the question and answer session, which also queried hospital and ward closures, and how the NHS reforms were being handled. The Health Summary is a briefing paper for policy-makers in health, and available online only through subscription. (KJ/RH).
