AnnotationThe objectives of this cross-national comparative study were to explore the perceptions and motivations of respondents in Singapore and China for initially volunteering in a non-governmental organisation (NGO) and the factors that explained continuation of volunteering. The research design was a triangulation of survey and interview data, involving 60 volunteers to the Huozhou Ja Yi Service Company in Shanxi, China, and 60 volunteers to Lions Befrienders in Singapore. The findings indicate that the older volunteers in both organisations perceived volunteer work as self-benefiting and altruistic. Older people's volunteer participation was multidimensional. It was a combination of intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, altruism and personal beliefs and desire for new experiences. Family and friends' support plays an important role in sustaining older volunteers. The findings also revealed that the social exchange theory is helpful in explaining older people's volunteerism.
