AnnotationThis is a summary of the full report "The social exclusion of older people : evidence from the first wave of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA)(Barnes et al, 2006), which is also available on the DCLG website. The study of exclusion experienced by older people is relatively new, as hitherto, most research has focused on exclusion by people of working age or families with children. It is intended to summarise the key findings of the main report, to examine how the landscape of social exclusion it reveals, is likely to change over the next 5 to 15 years and the policy implications of these changes, and, to highlight the most promising policy options in seeking to combat present and future social exclusion among older people. The research, which was carried out at the National Centre for Social Research (NCSR) and the University of Sheffield, was jointly funded by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) under the New Horizons Programme.
