AnnotationFrom a Hong Kong perspective, de-institutionalisation and community care are seen as the most influential movements in mental health services in the UK and the US in the past 30 years. This article begins with a short review of the historical development of mental health services in the UK and the US. The article's main concern is the dilemma between institutional care, community care and family care in the UK and the US. This can be described as a "push model", in which existing constraints on societal and cultural contexts that facilitate different forces push the care responsibilities from one party to another. The author outlines variants of the model, to then make comparisons with the mental health care situation in Hong Kong. (RH).
