Annotation | The author describes how work with one patient ("Mrs Taylor") in the last months of her life led to further similar experiences, confirming his view that older people who have often led exceptional lives suddenly become psychologically debilitated by the onset of a physical illness or other intimations of dependency. Specifically, he observes that many older people will say they are more afraid of dying than death, particularly dying alone.
