Annotation | The ODPM (now the Department for Communities and Local Government - DCLG) commissioned this research into Sustainable Cities and the Ageing Society (conducted during 2002 and 2003) as part of its New Horizons research programme. The New Horizons programme aims to introduce new research ideas; develop innovative, cross-cutting approaches to research; and provide the DCLG with early warning of medium- to long-term policy issues. The present investigation into Sustainable Cities and the Ageing Society focuses on active and independent older people in urban areas, over the next five to ten years. The research has as its background: the impact of an ageing society on how and where people will want to live; and the Government's commitment to delivering an urban renaissance based on sustainable cities and enhanced urban livability. The main research findings are based on focus groups and in-depth interviews with people in Maidstone and Basildon, and cover three questions. First, how do older people live? Second, how do people access well-being and quality of life in urban areas? Third, do suburbs and urban areas work for older people? (KJ/RH). |
