AnnotationData on this January-June 2003 Finnish study on use of antipsychotics were provided by 23 hospital-based institutions and 43 residential homes; residents aged 90+ were included, consisting of 1134 resident assessments. Data were extracted from the Register Assessment Instrument (RAI) database, based on Minimum Data Set (MDS) 2.0 assessments. Almost a third of nonagenarian residents received one or more antipsychotic medications. Querulous residents received antipsychotics more commonly than those with good social skills. There were no associations between any psychiatric symptoms or diagnoses including dementia and the use of antipsychotics. Results may indicate that in Finland, there could be a considerable gap between antipsychotic medication recommendations and actual clinical practice. (RH).
