Annotation | Research in the UK on the employment of older workers and retirement transitions has been led by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) Transitions after 50 programme, also reports commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions. A previous similarly themed section of Social Policy & Society (vol 3, no 2, 2004) looked at developments in public policy towards older workers. This section builds on that theme by examining questions around the aspirations, expectations and needs of older workers, given that the heterogeneity of the 50+ population is increasingly recognised. Seven further articles draw on a variety of methodologies and contexts, and highlight the various constraints on choice over work and retirement decisions. The authors of this article feel that what is required is a more supportive, encouraging environment that considers older workers' needs in extending their working lives. (RH). |
