Annotation | The true impact of low incomes on quality of life for older people living in the UK is revealed. This report presents findings of a study which seeks to inform the development of alternative approaches to the measurement of older people's poverty. It does so using qualitative techniques, focusing on the experiences of potentially disadvantaged groups often overlooked in mainstream research: people aged 85+; people with a disability; older people who are also informal carers; people of Bangladeshi origin; people of Irish origin; gypsies and travellers; people living in rural communities; and people living in institutional settings. Five key themes are analysed: low expectations and stoicism; life course dimensions; patterns of exclusion; quality of life; and issues beyond the basics such as social participation and maintaining independence. Key themes from the overall empirical research design, and implications for policy and research are discussed. Methodology and information materials used in the research are included as appendices.
