Annotation | If the 20th century was about getting older workers out of the labour force, the 21st century may well be about keeping them in, a development that would seem to suit large numbers of workers very well. Arguments in favour of early retirement have been losing their lustre in the light of slowing workforce growth and a US Social Security system under stress. With reported improvements in health for older age groups and a decline in physically demanding jobs, early retirement makes even less sense than it might have a generation or so ago. This article considers: the demographics of US labour force trends, projections and expectations; what employers and older workers want; and policy issues for an ageing workforce. (RH). |
