Annotation | A questionnaire survey was sent to 518 patients aged 70+, randomly selected from a general practice list for Sutton Coldfield, its aim to find out which older people are able to access a computer or wish to learn to use the internet. There was variation in numbers responding to parts of the questionnaire: 56/303 (18%) have access to a personal computer, and 41/304 (13%) have access to the internet. Only 63/294 (21%) wished to learn how to use the internet, mostly those without access to a computer. Those keen to engage with information technology (IT) initiatives tend to be younger with better access to facilities such as a mobile phone and a car. They also appear to be innovators, in that they were early adapters of the telephone, and have a willingness to explore other new services such as NHS Direct. However, very few people with internet access had used the electronic version of NHS Direct, NHS Direct Online. Despite the offer of training, most of the older people in this sample do not wish to learn to use the internet, something which may be to their disadvantage as health information and services are increasingly provided on-line.
