AnnotationIncreasing age is accompanied by multiple pathology (also called co-morbidity) and is closely linked with polypharmacy. The implications of the growing number of older people for prescribing have been relatively neglected by the wider medical public. All doctors - particularly general practitioners (GPs) and internists - should be better informed about the basic issues of drug treatment and prescribing for older people, including the alterations in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. In advanced old age, the presence of "geriatric giants" (instability with falls, immobility, decubitis ulcers, incontinence, intellectual and sensory impairments, dehydration, etc) may further complicate the situation, since they may all be caused or aggravated by drug treatment, yet at the same time respond beneficially to appropriate medication.
