Annotation | Jef Smith considers the practical, financial and emotional difficulties faced by older couples whose time together is ended when one of them goes into a care home. The author finds that the impact on the partner who remains outside the care home can be onerous, with both income and capital severely reduced. Also, the closeness of a long relationship is inevitably compromised in home settings where sharing a room or the presence of staff nearby impinge on the opportunity for physical intimacy. (KJ/RH). |
