Annotation | The driving patterns and habits of a group of 118 community-dwelling older women from three distinct regions of Minnesota were investigated. The authors were specifically interested in determining whether behaviours differed by driver age, marital status, health, and social support. Analysis revealed that women who drove daily, took longer trips and drove more miles were significantly younger. Compared to single women, married women drove more now than 5 years previously and were more likely to be depended on for transport. Women with comorbid medical conditions scored lower on health perceptions, physical functioning, mental health and role functioning, and higher on pain. Women who live with a non-driver had lower scores on social interaction, tangible support, mental health and social functioning, compared to women living with another licensed driver. Driving late in life has varying effects on older women, including the possibility of increased burden due to assuming transport responsibilities for others. (RH). |
