Annotation | Moving to a nursing home may prove eustressful (or uplifting) or distressful. 68 subjects aged 65+ admitted to a large nursing home be in Mesre-Venezia, Italy between June 2002 and April 2003 agreed to take part in this longitudinal survey. Only 4 had moved to the nursing home by their own choice, 13 because they were lonely, and 25 because they had no caregiver available. The reasons for admission reported by the interviewed residents only partly corresponded with those in their records. Moreover, the evaluation of each subject's needs and resources, prior to admission to a nursing home does not seem to take full account of the older person's subjective experience. Overall, the study showed that older people entering a nursing home in poor physical and mental health and with a low quality of life declined further after 6 months' follow-up: for this sample, the mortality rate was 33%. This suggests that moving to a nursing home did not bring about improvement or stabilisation, rather, psychiatric symptoms worsened and quality of life was perceived more poorly. (RH). |
