AnnotationAge Concern England (ACE) and the Mental Health Foundation launched this UK Inquiry (chaired by June Crown) in 2003. This first of two reports presents evidence from a comprehensive literature and policy review and the views of some 900 older people and carers, which points to five main areas that influence mental health and well-being in later life. The first is discrimination on the basis of age; not only is it the most common type of prejudice experienced by people aged 55+, it is a risk factor for poor mental health. Second, participation in meaningful activity, staying active and having a sense of purpose is important for mental well-being. Third, relationships with family and friends will help promote good mental health, whereas social isolation is a strong risk factor for poor mental health. Fourth, maintaining or improving physical health in later life will help to promote mental health. Lastly, poverty is a clear risk factor for poor mental health, which is also a risk factor for poverty. The report makes 15 recommendations aimed at bodies from local and central government, to voluntary organisations. (RH).
