Annotation | Palliative care is defined as the active holistic care of patients with advanced, progressive illness. This document aims to raise awareness and encourage debate around issues concerning the palliative care needs of people with dementia. It outlines the policy and demographic contexts; considers the experiences of dying for people with dementia; and explores some of the specific palliative care needs of people with dementia. Of many key challenges in helping meet the palliative needs of people with dementia and their family carers, the document highlights three: assessment; education and training; and support for family carers.
