Annotation | Public health benefits arising from advances to medical research often rely on the use of personal data. How can we ensure that protecting patients' interests does not unduly hamper scientific study? This is the last of a four-part series building on a Medical Research Council (MRC) review carried out during 2004-2005 on how to manage consent and confidentiality in using personal information in medical research. The authors conclude that while the privacy of individuals whose data we use should be respected, the health implications of the research must also be kept in mind. However, researchers should make an explicit assessment of the risks and benefits for the proposed use of confidential records. (RH). |
