Annotation | Despite increasing interest in understanding the factors involved in the decision of mature-aged workers (age 50+) to participate or withdraw from the Australian labour market, key questions remain unanswered. This is a report of a collaborative research project between the National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre (NSPAC) and the School of Economics and Finance, Faculty of Business, Queensland University of Technology, also involving the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing and the University of the Sunshine Coast. The study includes a literature review and discussion of the methodology and the sample (413 male and 493 female respondents). Key findings are presented on three research aims, the first two being to identify how to increase the participation of mature-aged workers in the labour market; and to identify barriers to participation. The third aim is to identify the costs and benefits, price and non-price, to engaging mature-aged workers from the perspective of the employee (supply side) and the employer (demand side). The study indicates that a more accurate understanding of mature-aged participation may be achieved through the development of models of participation and /phased retirement that are relevant to the individual from an economic and psychological perspective.
