AnnotationThis ShortCut is the first in a series of five briefing papers that sets out issues for those involved in commissioning, providing and receiving volunteer support associated with home care and intermediate care. It presents key findings from research carried out in 2005-06 by the Older People's Programme on services provided and supported by Community Service Volunteers (CSV, also RSVP), British Red Cross (BRC) and Help the Aged (HtA). This briefing outlines the current policy agenda regarding volunteer support, the fourteen themes identified in the fieldwork, and the twelve recommendations arising from the project. The themes include: the impact of social isolation; contribution to independence and well-being; flexibility and freedom as key motivators for volunteering; personal care issues; and the importance of time.
