AnnotationIn 2004, the government commissioned Sir Michael Lyons to undertake an independent inquiry to consider the case for changes to the local government funding system in England. In 2005, the remit was extended to issues relating to the function of local government and its future role. This summary outlines Age Concern England's reactions to the paper, "The Lyons Inquiry into Local Government - consultation paper and interim report" (December 2005). ACE sets out broad views, specifically looking at social services, also noting that the Council Tax must be viewed against wider issues of national funding. It recommends that finance systems should be fair and easier to understand. (RH).
