Annotation"Paupers progress" charts the exclusion and degradation of older people over the last seven centuries. In doing so, it exposes the roots of the present paternalistic and demeaning attitudes towards older people and the inadequacies of public pensions, particularly for women. The foreword by Alan Walker, Professor of Social Policy and Social Gerontology, University of Sheffield, introduces the context for the research conducted at the time of the Pensions Commission chaired by Adair Turner. Although the old age pension was introduced for those over 70 in 1908, the level of the basic state pension and the situation of women pensioners continues to give cause for concern. RH).
