AnnotationThe baby boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) in the US seem likely to expect more from life in middle age and beyond. Despite the documented overall decline in civic engagement, it seems likely that this generation of over 55s will contribute to society through engagement in civic affairs. This book seeks to provide an integrated perspective on current knowledge and thinking on civil engagement and the baby boomer generation. It comprises 12 chapters arranged in five sections. First, an overview of civic engagement includes consideration of social capital and the over 55s in the US. Second, national service (i.e. volunteering and voluntary work) and the 50+ population includes studies of Senior Corps programmes and AmeriCorps. The last three sections cover lifelong learning and civic engagement; intergenerational concepts and applications; and national and global agendas. (RH).
