AnnotationRecent policy developments across the UK highlight the importance of a more "person-centred" approach within community care services. Within this framework, however, little attention has been given to the role played by frontline workers in limiting, facilitating or delivering on these policy imperatives. Understanding the roles and experiences of frontline workers is crucial in understanding how frontline care can be made more "person-centred". The authors look at the barriers to and opportunities for promoting person-centred care for older people, disabled people, and people from minority ethnic groups. Their report examines perceptions of frontline work: what the most important qualities of frontline workers are, and the value attached to care work. Organisational and systemic issues that influence the experiences of frontline workers and service users are explored. Recommendations are made on further research to fill gaps in knowledge, while policy recommendations include a scoping study, a national mapping exercise, consideration of training needs for this group of staff, and more consultation with care workers and users alike on practice issues.
