What is dementia care? 2. An invisible workload | Author(s) | Richard Ward, Antony Andreas Vass, Neeru Aggarwal |
Journal title | Journal of Dementia Care, vol 14, no 1, Jan/Feb 2006 |
Pages | pp 28-34 |
Keywords | Dementia ; Management [care] ; Communication ; Care home staff ; Attitude. |
Annotation | How do care staff describe their experience of caring? And what part do emotions play in working with people with dementia? In the second of three articles, the authors discuss what they have learned from talking to care staff. They find that communication with people with dementia is routinely avoided in care settings, creating a social barrier between staff and residents. The full report of this research, "Dementia of the Alzheimer's type: communication patterns and their consequences for effective care", has been submitted to Jewish Care and is to be published in 2006.
