What is dementia care?
 — 3: Seeing patterns - making sense
Author(s)Richard Ward, Antony Andreas Vass, Neeru Aggarwal
Journal titleJournal of Dementia Care, vol 14, no 2, March/April 2006
Pagespp 22-23
KeywordsDementia ; Management [care] ; Communication ; Care home staff ; Attitude.
AnnotationIn the last of three articles, the authors argue that there are many ways in which people with dementia communicate: it is our responsibility to learn how to listen. During their research, they came across assumptions on the part of care workers who defined communication only in terms of spoken responses. This article focuses on non-verbal communication - communicating with the body, and talking without words - and the value of understanding patterns of activity and movement which help make sense of a person's mood and thoughts. The full report of this research, "Dementia of the Alzheimer's type: communication patterns and their consequences for effective care", has been submitted to Jewish Care and is to be published in 2006.
