AnnotationOf developing countries, the Latin American and Caribbean world region have received little coverage in the gerontological literature. The first four articles concern three data collection studies in the region (the first being a summary): the Survey of Health and Wellbeing of Elders; the national Mexican Health and Aging Study; and the Hispanic Established Populations for Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly in the United States (H-EPESE). The prevalence of diagnosed diabetes in seven cities in the region is examined using the Health, Wellbeing and Aging (SABE) project. Other articles consider obesity in Barbados; fertility decline, family structure and support for older people in Latin America and Asia; cognitive impairment in Mexican and Spanish-speaking US immigrants; and disability in older Mexicans and Mexican Americans. Overall, the articles confirm the value of comparable data across populations in different countries being available. Preparation of this special volume was supported partly by the Panamerican Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) through an inter-agency agreement with the US National Institutes of Aging (NIA/NIH). (RH).
