AnnotationThere were 20 million people aged 50 and over in the UK in 2003. This report updates material in the first edition, "Social focus on older people" (TSO, 1999). It is part of the "Focus On" series of publications and combines data from the 2001 Census and other sources to illustrate the topic, in this case people aged 50+ in the UK. Among other sources used are large scale surveys including the General Household Survey (GHS), the Labour Force Survey (LFS), the Expenditure and Food Survey (EFS), the Family Resources Survey (FRS), and the 2002 English Longitudinal Survey of Ageing (ELSA). Charts and statistics accompany commentary on the following themes: population; family and living arrangements; housing; the labour market; health and well being; health and social care; income, wealth and expenditure; and lifestyles and leisure interests. The report - which is aimed at a wide audience from policy makers to the general public - can also be accessed at the website (http://www.statistics.gov.uk/focuson/olderpeople) (KJ/RH).
