Annotation | Hypothermia can be defined as an unintentional fall in core body temperature below 35º Celsius, and older people and people with debilitating disease or malnutrition are at risk. This article should help doctors to understand the condition better. It briefly explains: why temperature homeostasis is important; how hypothermia develops; the predisposing conditions; diagnosis and investigation; management; rewarming strategies; and preventing hypothermia. Healthcare professionals are in a position to advise older people on how to keep warm in winter. (RH). |
