A century of progress in palliative care

Pagesp s24 (Review 2000)
AnnotationThe author charts the progress of palliative care in Canada. Despite much progress made, palliative-care standards, funding and programme development continue to vary widely from province to province and even within individual provinces. The high profile issues such as physician-assisted suicide, euthanasia and legalised medical use of marijuana have detracted from the need to focus on developing more comprehensive and uniform palliative care practices in Canada. However, a report from the Canadian Senate in June 2000 may help redress these deficiencies as it calls for a national strategy. (KJ).
