AnnotationSurrey Police developed "reassurance policing" as a response to what had become known as the "reassurance gap" - the gap between the public perception of rising crime and a falling crime rate. The aims and outcomes sought by the National Reassurance Policing Programme (NRPP) were: reduced fear of crime, and improved sense of safety; reduced anti-social behaviours, and improved quality of life; increased public satisfaction with, and confidence in, the police; and improved social capacity. This report presents results regarding these aims and on community engagement, for which six NRPP trial sites and six control sites were compared. All these various elements appear key to a successful approach to neighbourhood policing. (RH).
