AnnotationLinks between depression and social factors - particularly social support - are variously confirmed in four articles in this issue of Aging & Mental Health. This editorial not only introduces these articles, but also notes the development in the early 1960s of a hypothesis that suggested an expected transition by older people from social engagement to disengagement and withdrawal. The idea has been challenged by those who espouse social support and social engagement in countering loneliness and depressive symptoms. (RH).
