AnnotationLongitudinal data from the Iowa Health Poll collected in spring 1992 and in in autumn 1993 following the severe storms and floods that affected the Midwest state in July 1993 are used. This study examines the influence of support received and support provision on changes in perceived social support among older people exposed to an acute stressor. Results indicate that flood exposure and higher levels of social support at Time 1 were positively associated with both receiving social support and providing social support specific to the flood. Women were more likely to have received flood specific support and to have perceived higher social support post flood. The study supports and elaborates on earlier findings that link disaster exposure to post-disaster changes in perceived social support. (RH).
