Annotation | The British Geriatrics Society (BGS) and the Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry of the Royal College of Psychiatrists have formed a consensus group representing various specialties, with the objective of defining how geriatricians can play a more integral role in the recognition, diagnosis and management of patients with dementia. This is the group's consensus statement, which presents a model for the care of patients with dementia. It explains the need for consensus, since large and multidisciplinary teams are involved in patients management. It also covers: recognition of dementia by geriatricians; the case register system; champion-led memory services; the pharmacological treatments in Alzheimer's disease (AD); managing risk factors; and education and training. That information must cross boundaries between the different professional groups involved is emphasised. (RH). |
