AnnotationAge Concern's response to 'Equality and diversity: coming of age' and the associated draft Regulations builds on its previous responses to the "Age matters" consultation (2001) and its Briefing Note on "Coming of age" (2005). In particular, it calls for the Mandatory Retirement Ages (MRAs) to be reviewed: MRAs should be outlawed immediately, and if not, there should be a "sunset clause" to bring them to an end by 2011. It suggests that the new law should resemble a Code of Practice, to include examples that will help employers make decisions. The use of objective justification of age discrimination is opposed; and people over normal pension age should not be barred from building up pension entitlements. The full version of the response to this Consultation can be obtained from Age Concern's website in the policy papers section under "Information and Policy", or on receipt of an SAE at the address given.
