Annotation | Dorset has a greater proportion of older people than any other English county, which has implications for service provision. As with a previous project supported by Help and Care, older people were involved in the research process. The aim was to identify the aspirations and barriers preventing participation in learning opportunities for people aged 60+ in North and East Dorset. The report examines adult education provision, and comments on barriers to access concerning transport provision, and the priority given to the young, those in work and the unemployed. The project aimed to support the development of learning that is inclusive, accessible and responsive to the needs and wishes of older people living in rural areas. The study comprised a survey and 12 discussion groups conducted January-June 2003, based around some recurring themes about people's learning experiences and activities, what prevents their participation, and what they would be interested in learning now. Recommendations are made about information provision, transport and timing, delivery methods (e.g. healthy living schemes and community-based learning), residential care provision, and developing wider participation. These recommendations highlight the importance of actively engaging with older people, and the need for a flexible partnership approach to widening learning opportunities. (RH) |
