AnnotationEmpirical literature on questions relating to the costs of caring for older people is examined, and provides a factual context for the ethical discussion. The views of the American philosopher Norman Daniels - as expounded in "Am I my parents' keeper?" (1988), and what he calls the "Prudential Lifespan Account" - provide an ethical foundation which is questioned in later chapters. General ethical questions considered concern the ethics of resource allocation in medicine and the concept of "rationing". Another American philosopher of medicine, Daniel Callaghan, questions what he calls "the modernisation of ageing", prompting a critique of his work. Concluding chapters ask whether there is a crisis of ageing and whether older people are a burden. The implications of the arguments for policy making are summarised. Appendices include: a chronology of the development of National Health Service (NHS) principles and priorities from 1942 until 2003; the ideas of justice and solidarity as in the Swedish system; and justice and the Nordic healthcare systems.
