AnnotationDifferent patterns of autobiographical memory loss exist in the various neurodegenerative disorders. Recall of memory for autobiographical incidents and personal semantic information are dissociable in semantic dementia (SD). Alzheimer's disease (AD), frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and semantic dementia may be powerful models to study the influence of emotion on memory recall. The authors administered the Autobiographical Memory Interview (AMI) to 8 individuals with AD, 11 with FTD, 8 with SD, and 8 controls. Autobiographical incidents and personal semantic memory were assessed from three time periods: childhood, early adulthood and recent life. Individuals with SD recalled more details of autobiographical incidents from the most recent 5 years than from childhood and early adulthood. No difference was found between childhood and early adulthood. Recall of personal semantic information was related to the age of the memory with less remembered from earlier time periods. SD is a compelling model in which to study the anatomy of episodic memory. (RH).
