AnnotationThe British and French sections of the Franco-British Council briefly considered the implications of the ageing society in France and UK at this seminar, before concentrating on two broad topics. First, the work-life balance was explored from the perspectives of increasing employment rates, the value of older workers, and later not earlier retirement. Second, the welfare of the older generation, examined the contribution of the market, the voluntary sector and the state, also the "consumer" aspects of products and services that are designed with older people in mind. Differences and similarities between France and UK emerged. Both countries, though, manifest an increasing degree of social concern for older people both in the world of work and in retirement. (RH).
