Annotation | Older people are often discriminated against in the workplace on the basis of stereotypes about ageing. This report considers some of the common "myths" about older workers. Where possible, it provides evidence and arguments that aim to dispel inaccurate perceptions about older people, and demonstrates that health and safety cannot be used as an "excuse" to justify the use of older workers. The report uses information and data from a variety of sources, for example statistics from the Office of National Statistics (ONS), published journal articles and reports. The report highlights facts about older people and cognitive capacity, physical strength and endurance, sensory abilities, adaptability to change, learning new information, levels of sickness absence, accidents in the workplace, and productivity. In all, organisations will benefit from efforts to maintain the ability to work of all employees at any age. This research is one of a number of projects commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) on behalf of the Age Partnership Group (APG) as part of the National Guidance Campaign (NGC).
