Annotation | The final report of the Commission on the Future of Health Care in Canada (known as the Romanow Commission after its Commissioner, Roy Romanow) was published in 2002, and reaffirms the desirability of a public health care system. Together with an editorial, 'Yes to home care, but don't forget older Canadians' by Réjean Hébert (pp 9-10), this article outlines and assesses the extent to which the report's recommendations respond to current and future needs of home care. Reference is particularly made to home care being described as the "next essential service", and the possibility of the federal government becoming a partner in funding home care. Mental health, post-hospital acute, and palliative home care are discussed as priorities for inclusion in the Home Care Transfer package. While this article comments on issues omitted, overall, the view is that the Romanow Commission's report takes home care in Canada in the right direction. (RH). |
