AnnotationAgeing research in sub-Saharan Africa shows that intergenerational socio-economic support from children to their ageing parents has been reversed, particularly due to changes in family structure. Over time, there have been changes that have had greater impacts on the lives of older people in developing countries. Some of these changes have been due to the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS among the economically active adults and the reversal of older people's roles, which has included the caregiving role. Using data from the 1994-1995 Zimbabwe Ageing Survey indicates that socio-economic support of older people is constrained by the interplay of various social forces, among which are poverty and changes in family structure.
