Annotation | This is an evidence-based look at the future of work in the UK over the next 20 years, which draws on research conducted under the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Future of Work Programme. Sixteen questions are asked that variously concern the demand for and availability of work, how demand might be met (including the role of older workers), the organisation and management of work (including the role of trade unions), and the work-life balance. Four overall themes for the next 20 years emerge from the study. First, workplaces will be transformed as the British economy moves up the value chain into activities that yield higher revenues. Second, tight labour markets will have an impact on many aspects of work. Third, change will be more dramatic in how people work than in how they are employed. Lastly, new motivational forms of management will gradually transform the experience of work. (RH). |
