AnnotationTrends in social work over the last 25 years are discussed. Within the broad theme of social work as a social institution, more detailed attention is given to services for children and older people, managerialism, and social work evaluation and research. Processes of secularisation, professionalism and managerialism have weakened the impetus for social reform. This has sharpened dilemmas for social work in balancing benefits for service users and public involvement with tight state control and regulation. (RH).
