AnnotationThe Old Age Allowance (OAA), the social pension in Bangladesh, began in 1988, when it was targeted at the "most old and poorest 20 persons of each ward of all unions in all upazilas". National guidelines now stipulate that priority will be given to the oldest people in the villages: the lowest age limit is 57, but most recipients are age 60+. This paper outlines trends in the OAA. and evaluates its implementation and selection processes. The paper appeared in its original form in October 2004 and was written by Abul Haseeb Khan, Director of the Resource Integration Centre, Dhaka. (RH)
