AnnotationAn annual comprehensive review of the market for the care of older people in the UK. An executive summary highlights the main findings, and notes that at April 2005, there were some 476,200 places in residential settings for long stay care of older and physically disabled people across all sectors in the UK. The present survey considers the impact of demographic change; the structure of the care homes industry, its market size and trends; demand for and supply of care home services; sources of finance; and fees, costs, profits and return on capital. Statistical tables and figures illustrate these trends and developments. For each region of the UK, key indicators demonstrate variations in demand and supply for nursing and residential care. All data are from Laing & Buisson's databases and from primary research gathered each year in March. A section on customer profiles includes some coverage of niche markets, home care, day care and extra care. The development of government policy on social care and its regulation since 1997 is described, and recent initiatives such as the "Independence, well-being and choice" Green paper are highlighted.
