AnnotationThe European Alzheimer's Disease Consortium (EADC) is a network of European centres of excellence specialising in Alzheimer's disease (AD). The focus of this article is ensuring that all AD centres across Europe are capable of using a similar method of data collection. It outlines how information about the patient assessment tools used by each participating centre was obtained, along with how data was collected from routine new patient referrals. The study comprised 704 patients from 36 memory clinics in 13 countries across Europe; 555 patients had a clinical diagnosis of dementia (68.5% with AD, 10.3% with vascular dementia, 5% with frontal lobe dementia, 4.1% with Lewy body dementia, and 5.6% mixed dementia. Among assessment scales used were: Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) 48.9%, and Reisberg's Global Dementia Scale 38.6%. However, the multiplicity of tests used points to a need for a consensus in the use of assessment tools for dementia in Alzheimer's centres across Europe. (RH).
