AnnotationThe study of long-term care was one of the major components of the OECD Health Project carried out from 2001 to 2004. In OECD countries, there is a trend towards more universal public provision of long-term care services for those dependent on such care. This study reports on the latest trends in long-term care policies in 19 OECD countries: Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and the US. It studies lessons learnt from countries that have undertaken major reforms in the last 10 years. Trends in expenditure, financing and the number of care recipients are analysed based on new data on cross-country differences. The report examines co-ordinated approaches to providing a continuum of care that is more responsive to individuals' needs. Other issues covered are: consumer direction and choice in long-term care; monitoring and improving the quality of long term care; and paying for long term care. (RH).
